Suraj Singh Memorial College, Ranchi (A constituent unit of Ranchi University, Ranchi) was humbly started in the year 1972 by a few philanthropic and dedicated people of Ranchi. The college was inaugurated by the then Chief Minister of Bihar Sri Kedar Pandey, with initial Intermediate Arts and Science teaching. The commerce teaching was added latter on at intermediate level and in subsequent years the college management was given permission to start Degree teaching with Honours level in all the three faculties viz Science, Arts and Commerce. Latter the college, management was taken over by the Ranchi University, Ranchi and the college was made a constituent unit of Ranchi University Ranchi. The College is situated in a magnificent, beautiful and picturesque Ranchi-Kanke-Pataratu Highway. The college premise is at a distance of about 6 Km from Albert Ekka Chaowk (Main Road, Ranchi) and about 3 Km from Kishori Singh Yadav Chowk (near Upper Bazar, Ranchi). The college building was donated by the family of Late Suraj Singh.
